This year’s monthly blog series is counting down Britain’s quirky bus routes. Following last month’s wander through Windsor Great Park using roads out-of-bounds to ordinary traffic on White Bus route 01, this month we’re heading north for a ride on a route where the bus timetable is determined by the tide timetable.
It is of course, the Borders Buses operated route 477 which connects Holy Island with Berwick-upon-Tweed.

I blogged about a ride on the route a couple of years ago in March 2023 so apologies to regular readers for some duplication of that blog, but I couldn’t not include this route in the Top 10 due to its abundance of quirkiness thanks to the unique timetable arrangement.
This comprises two return journeys between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Holy Island running just on Wednesdays and Saturdays with the route including a causeway which becomes out of bounds at high tide.



Depending on the tides you get to enjoy between four and eight hours on the Island, or if travelling the other way from Holy Island to Berwick-upon-Tweed, you’ll enjoy between an hour and 50 minutes and six hours and 15 minutes in the town but don’t forget Holy Island residents wanting to shop in Berwick-upon-Tweed need to factor in a 10 minute walk from the station to the town centre and back again with the latter involving a fairly steep hill.
On first glance the timetable looks quite extensive…

… but then you realise each journey has a lettered code at the top which signifies the dates when it runs according to the tide times.

Information on tide times and which journeys run is currently displayed for periods of three months and at the time of writing, information is available for the first quarter of 2025 so there’s only a couple more dates to go and strangely, today’s date, Saturday 15th March, is missed off the list. It looks as though there is no service today.

Looking more closely at the above schedule I see other dates are missed off including Saturdays 25 January, 8th February and 1st March as well as Wednesdays 15th January, 12th February and 26th March.
Presumably this is because there are no “safe tide times” when it makes sense to run buses on those days, but not being an expert on tide times I can’t confirm this is the explanation.

I’ve travelled on the route a couple of times in the last few years. Two years ago the journey was a mid morning departure in March and we only carried one passenger making a local journey in Berwick-upon-Tweed with only me to the Island and one on the return once back on the mainland. It wasn’t surprising there were no day visitors to the Island as the afternoon journey back wasn’t until after dark at 18:00.
Way back in 2013 a visit in late summer found the Island to be very busy with tourists enjoying the quaintness it offers including Lindisfarne Priory.

There’s a small community who live on the Island…

… but facilities are limited, although there is a Post Office.

There are a few bus routes which include a ferry crossing on their route: more bus 50 Sandbanks Ferry; Go Cornwall 70/70A/70B Torpoint Ferry; West Coast Motors 477 Colintraive/Rhubodach Ferry; ZetTrans 24/28 Yell Sound and Belmont/Gutcher on Yell and Unst in Shetland Islands (there may be others?) but Borders Buses’ route 477 is unique in having a combined tide and bus timetable due to traversing a tidal causeway. That’s what makes it quirky.

I don’t think it is unique the First Bus services 68 & 86 to Mersey Island can have the timetable changed at High tide as they cannot get across the causeway

It is because of reading your original blog on this route, that last year I managed to give the 477 ago whilst staying up in Edinburgh, I missed out on an opportunity in 2023, for is quirkiness I’d recommend it as a route you need to experience.

Regarding Mersea Island there is also Hedingham’s 63 which strangely enough one of which I saw only this week in Colchester and had in the digital display at the front ‘terminating at Peldon due to hide (sic) tide’!

the situation at Mersea could be better if they adjusted the real time info. Maybe they have after my complaint. The real time showed the bus as coming even when the tide stopped them.
on Holy Island you can walk there in the Saints Way across the sands. When we first stayed on the island we found that there were no English banks north of Alnwick when we wanted to use a cash till, this was before mutual recognition. We had to buy our ber with a credit card decades before this was the norm. The landlord was OK about it. He re cognisrd another quirky situation! Ray Wilkes

The so called Real Time system cannot cope with unplanned or semi unplanned changes it just assume the bus will covers its normal route so it show the bus as come but it eventually just disappears

Not sure about the comment on the walk to the shops at Berwick, given that the bus runs through the centre on the way to the station. Not everyone wants to do the full route!

Golden Square as shown on the timetable is the main town centre stop in Berwick. The only steep hill involved is if you want to shop or visit one of the three real ale pubs in Bridge Street.

Actually you can get on and off the 477 bus in the centre of Berwick as with any other buses rather than restricted to the railway station.

Buses to/from Mersea Island (Essex) are occasionally unable to across the Strood because of very high tides.

Yea, my prediction that this would be in the top ten was correct. Mind you it wasn’t the hardest pick.

Swanage? Is that a new ferry? I think you mean Sandbanks. There are often delays here. Last time we were on the 50 we had to wait for an outbound Brittany Ferry and the time before a the ferry was the other side. 15 late at Swanage but still quicker than the 40 via Wareham depending on train connections.

The current offering of an Optare Solo is a bit of a come down from my 1981 journey- when the route was quite new- when a United Bristol VR ran the service. I think the very first journey-around 1975- was operated by a Lodekka.

Another ferry which takes a regular bus route, hourly at times, is from Konstanz to Meersburg in southern Germany, which I took twice in October when using a Bodensee pass [ 3 countries]. I was going from Ravensburg to Konstanz. It is a very slick operation and you can get out and walk around and have coffee.. Flix and other coaches use it too.

Border Buses always look well kept. Never travelled on them, but they must be worked hard and their area does not appear to be great bus territory. Good to see an operator succeeding in a rural area.

We did the route from and to Berwick many years ago. Holy Island has a magical quality and is well worth a visit. My memory from a much more recent car-borne visit is that there are plenty of facilities for day visitors later in the season.

Can confirm the well-kept Borders Buses vehicles. I use the 253 occasionally between Edinburgh and East Linton (sometimes more convenient than ECB’s X7), and can’t recall any recent exceptions to the cleanliness of the bus and the courtesy/consideration of the driver.

I get the point about having a combined bus and tide timetable. The other example (although NOT the same), of course, is Mersea Island, where the buses don’t run when it’s flooded (which I think are normally the higher than usual spring/autumn tides) I’ve never been so don’t know more.

Just wondered whether you had spotted a new daily bus service here in Staffordshire, linking Tamworth and the National Memorial Arboretum. Operated by Diamond Bus, it’s been running over the winter, but was formally launched last Friday.

Hi Roger, Shiel buses route 506, the 13.50 from Fort William to Kilchoan uses the ferry and is a highly recommended two and a half hour journey, the bus connects at Kilchoan with the Ferry to Tobermory on Mull.

Stayed in Berwick last October and paid a visit with a friend on the 477 on a Wednesday. Was surprised by the number of users. There was a pretty good load, which goes to show the appeal of the journey, even at off-peak hours. I’ve heard that the bus gets pretty full on summer weekends, so much so that travellers trying to wave down the bus on its journey from Berwick regularly get passed by as there isn’t enough space.

My only visit to Berwick upon Tweed was on one of my motorcycle touring holidays. It was the stop off between hotels in Edinburgh and Whitby. The best facility in my Berwick hotel was a heater to dry certain items of clothing. All this, for a Surrey driver, on a Honda CD175. Tyne Tunnel was grim for a ‘biker!

On Wednesday 26th March, high tide can be deduced as around 12.00-13.00.
So no service due to the midday high tide and tide heights vary a lot and this the unsafe crossing times are variable compared to that which is predicted so you need a good safety margin, e.g 30 minutes minimum.
As Northumberland Council etc will not want people getting ‘stuck’ they may be discouraging travel at certain times and one way is don’t run the bus.
